Promoters of Rototom Sunsplash celebrates the festival’s 25th anniversary this year, from August 16-22 in Benicassim, Spain. And they will do so with some special guests.
Influential British disc jockey and reggae historian David Rodigan, Sly and Robbie, Alborosie and American roots singer Ben Harper, have pride of place on the marquee event.
The 67-year-old Rodigan is on a tour observing his 40th anniversary in the music business, as well as promoting his autobiography, Rodigan: My Life In Reggae, which was released last year. On August 19, he will be backed by the 25-piece Outlook Orchestra, in a theatric look at his career and history of Jamaican music.
Harper, a Grammy-winning blues singer and guitarist who has collaborated with reggae acts like Toots And The Maytals, is scheduled to perform on August 16. The following day, legendary drum and bass team Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare present Taxi Connection, with British singer Bitty McLean, Yellowman and Johnny Osbourne.
Alborosie, the Italian singer who is arguably the best touring act in contemporary reggae, appears on August 20.
Ska takes the spotlight on August 18. The Skatalites, Derrick Morgan and trumpeter Vin Gordon are among the acts performing that day.
Jimmy Cliff, Tarrus Riley, The Mighty Diamonds and Cocoa Tea are also on this year’s Rototom Sunsplash.
